- [Chris Agee](https://irishpages.org/product-author/chris-agee/) - Chris Agee was born in San Francisco and grew up in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island. After high school at Phillips Academy Andover and a year in Aix-en-Provence, France, he attended Harvard University and since graduation has lived in Ireland. His third collection of poems, Next to Nothing, was shortlisted in Britain for the 2009 Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry, and its sequel, Blue Sandbar Moon, appeared in 2018. - [Patricia Craig](https://irishpages.org/product-author/patricia-craig/) - Patricia Craig was born and grew up in Belfast. She spent many years in London, and returned to live in Northern Ireland in 1999. A highly distinguished critic, reviewer and essayist, she is the author of two biographies, three memoirs, and (with Mary Cadogan) three critical studies. She has edited many anthologies, including The Oxford Book of Ireland, The Belfast Anthology and The Ulster Anthology. She was awarded a Wingate Scholarship in 2002, and has been on the Board of the Seamus Heaney Centre. Volume Three of her extended memoir, Asking for Trouble, is forthcoming. - [Gerard McCarthy](https://irishpages.org/product-author/gerard-mccarthy/) - Gerard McCarthy (1949 – 2022) was born and reared in Dublin and spent much of his adult life in Sligo. He studied Philosophy at University College Dublin. His first published essays – now collected here – all appeared in issues of Irish Pages. In his later years, he divided time between his Sligo residence, an old schoolhouse on Collanmore Island in Clew Bay, and various travels to the Mediterranean and other peripheries of Europe. - [Ciarán O’Rourke](https://irishpages.org/product-author/ciaran-orourke/) - Ciarán O’Rourke was born in 1991 and took a degree in English and History at Trinity College, Dublin. He received a Masters in English and American Studies from Oxford in 2014, as well as a doctorate on William Carlos Williams at his alma mater in Dublin in 2019. He is the author of two novels and thirteen collections of poems, most recently Snow Falling on Chestnut Hill: New and Selected Poems (2012), Semibreve (2015), Dear Pilgrims (2018) and Naming of the Bones (2021), all from Carcanet Press. He is also the author of a memoir, Give Dust a Tongue (Columba, 2015). He was President of the European Academy of Poetry and was made Chevalier en l’ordre des arts et des lettres by the French Government. In 1979, he founded Poetry Ireland, the national poetry organization, and Poetry Ireland Review. He is a member of Aosdána, and divides his time between Dublin and Leitrim. - [Chris Preddle](https://irishpages.org/product-author/chris-preddle/) - Chris Preddle, born in London in 1943, was educated at Stonyhurst, where the poet Peter Levi read out great poetry instead of Greek history, and at Oxford, where he studied Greek of all periods. He worked in libraries in the public and voluntary sectors, set up a childcare library, and has retired to a valley under the Yorkshire Pennines with Jacqueline and Sappho the cat. His third poetry collection is The May Figures (Eyewear, 2022); his second was Cattle Console Him (Waywiser Press, 2010). His work has appeared in Irish Pages and other Irish and English magazines. - [Brian Holton](https://irishpages.org/product-author/brian-holton/) - Brian Holton, born in Galashiels in 1949, and educated at the Universities of Edinburgh and Durham, has published more than twenty books and pamphlets of translated poetry, including Yang Lian’s Venice Elegy (Edizioni Damocle, 2019) and Narrative Poem (Bloodaxe Books, 2017). In 2021, he was awarded the inaugural Sarah McGuire Prize for Poetry Translation for Yang Lian’s Anniversary Snow (Shearsman Books, 2019). Holton’s collection of classical poems in Scots, Staunin Ma Lane, was published by Shearsman Books in 2016, and his Hard Roads an Cauld Hairst Winds: Li Bai an Du Fu in Scots by Taproot Press in early 2022. Hard Roads an Cauld Hairst Winds was nominated for Scots Book of the Year, Scots Language Awards 2022. He has won other prizes both for his own poetry in Scots and for his translations into both Scots and English. He is a recovering academic who taught Chinese language and literature at Edinburgh, Durham and Newcastle, and translation at Newcastle and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. - [David Byers](https://irishpages.org/product-author/david-byers/) - David Byers is a composer, musicologist, writer and music producer. After initial studies at Queen’s University Belfast, he spent four years as the Manson Scholar in composition at London’s Royal Academy of Music. Awarded the Arts Council of Ireland’s Macauley Fellowship and a Belgian Government Scholarship in 1972, he studied with Henri Pousseur at the Liège Conservatoire. He spent 25 years making a wide variety of music and speech programmes for BBC Radio 3, Radio 4, and Radio Ulster, before being appointed Chief Executive of the Ulster Orchestra for the next eight years, retiring in 2010. His music covers most genres except opera and includes orchestral commissions from RTÉ and the BBC. His editions of other composers range across the baroque, classical and romantic periods to the 20th century world of Ina Boyle. Byers writes many programme notes and also liner notes for CDs. He was a member of the Arts Council, An Chomhairle Ealaíon in the mid 1980s and was a Coulson Governor of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. - [Maddy Tongue](https://irishpages.org/product-author/maddy-tongue/) - Maddy Tongue was born and raised in Northern Ireland, and trained as a physiotherapist before taking a BA and an MA in Literature and Creative Writing in 2011, both from the University of East Anglia. She has had a lifelong involvement in dance. Following early ballet classes, she trained in modern dance with the Czech dancer Helen Lewis in Belfast and appeared in many dance, drama and opera productions with Cambridge Modern Ballet and The Belfast Modern Dance Group, including Helen’s early innovative work Phases. - [Nebojša Lujanović](https://irishpages.org/product-author/nebojsa-lujanovic/) - Nebojša Lujanović was born in 1981 in Novi Travnik (Bosnia and Herzegovina). He is a writer, scholar, and assistant professor at the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek. He studied political science, sociology, and comparative literature at the University of Zagreb, where he received his doctorate in 2012 in the field of literary theory. He graduated Dramaturgy in Screenwriting and Playwrighting from Academy of Drama Art in Zagreb. He works as a dramaturge in various theatre in Croatia and abroad. - [Avi Shlaim](https://irishpages.org/product-author/avi-shlaim/) - Emeritus Professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of St Antony’s College, Avi Shlaim is a globally renowned historian of the modern Middle East. He held a British Academy Research Readership between 1995-1997; a British Academy Research Professorship between 2003-2006; he was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 2006; and he was awarded a British Academy Medal for lifetime achievement in 2017. An Arab Jew, he was born in Baghdad in 1945; grew up in Israel; served in the Israel Defence Forces; and received his university education at Cambridge and the London School of Economics. He is based at the Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College, where his main research interest continues to be the Arab-Israeli conflict, mostly recently the genocide in Gaza.
