Vol. 12 No. 2: Scotland

Ten years after the Independence Referendum, Irish Pages asks diverse Scottish writers of distinction – established, mid-career and new – to think about their country, and take stock of the current state of its culture and polity, language and literature, ecology and environment, while a specially curated selection of Scotland’s emerging poets will offer a younger perspective. How will Scotland fare in an era of momentous and unpredictable political change? Stands Scotland where it did?

“So where are we now? In this volume, the elders speak out of that cultural memory. None is happy, none particularly optimistic. The somewhat younger generation included have had to develop their artistic practice and their careers in the digital age; since this represents the principal division between the two generations, they are perhaps better equipped to see, if not more clearly into the future, then differently. To give us a sense of Scotland’s youth and vitality, we asked Niall Campbell, himself a fine younger poet, to edit a section of new and emerging poets from Scotland. The poets have forever been the ‘future dreamers’ of the culture, and one ignores their voices at one’s peril … We were indeed still in the dream times. The dream seems to have vanished, for now, and in its place is little but empty sleep. But in rest we gather strength. Nonetheless it may be time to wake up and face the reality of Scotland’s present situation before we dare dream again.”
